The piece takes the form of a sundial and draws on histories of the site, referencing the former Cane Hill Hospital’s iconic clock tower, which once stood there.
Text-based elements within the work are lifted from volumes of The Cane Hill Chronicle, the former patients’ magazine archived at the Museum of Croydon; and follow from a series of workshops and consultation meetings with local residents, students at Coulsdon College, and artists at Bethlem Gallery. Textures taken from images of local landscape are included as enamel-printed panels, and the natural patination of metals is embraced with the use of un-coated copper and corten, acknowledging the passage time and the changing seasons.
